AMY: Motion Graphics Book Advertisement

In todays Process and Production workshop I put all my skills so far together to create a ten second motion graphics book advertisement on After Effects. The book I chose to advertise was Amy:My Daughter, Written by Mitch Winehouse about the short life of Amy Winehouse.

The first time I used After Effects I found it difficult and tricky so this time I was determined to try out lots of different methods and techniques. I started by picking a theme; I wanted a dark and gloomy atmosphere to hang around in the video with similar imagery to represent the dulcet tone within Amy's life. I wanted this grey theme to run throughout the video.

I started off by creating Amy Winehouse inspired illustrations on Illustrator.

I love the way in which these images really capture the spirit of Amy, I wanted to use iconic imagery from all the way through her life which would then act like a timeline for the narrative of the Ad. I love the sombre and dark mood; the way in which Amy looks like she is smiling but a deeper pain lingers in the background. I used shapes to build this illustration in illustrator with a monotone colour scheme.

I then created the pre-slides which I would insert into the Video. I added a film grain background which would once again allow me to work in the grey dark tone that is set through the illustrations. I also found a copyright free old fashioned film grain that would be placed over the top of the image and a copyright free Amy Winehouse track

Here are the examples of my pre-motion slides:

I really like the outcome of my final piece; I have re designed a few moments in the piece and feel the whole thing objectifies my outcome which was to create a very sombre piece about the timeline of Amy's life to advertise a book about her. I believe that if I was to improve I would use a lengthier time lapse so it didn't seem like images or type were being crammed in. I would also use a different font and different, more effective transitions and effects.

Here is the final piece:
