Website Design

Image
For my Placement Year, I have decided to create an online presence by sharing my work online through a website. Keeping in line with my CV Design and Cover Letter example I have decided to add the same font, colour scheme and layout design that should hopefully marry it with the sort of brand I am going for relating back to the type of designs I enjoy creating.  Here is the rough outline of my website design. My website is: www.joemitchell.design

Placement Preparation; matching Cover Letter and CV Design

Image
Coming up to Placement Year I believed it was important to spend some time developing and working on my CV, Cover Letter and Website Design. I decided to have a unique running brand throughout so all matched and all fit within a particular design scheme. Looking for inspiration found online and working out what I wanted to portray I have created an online personality that I think works well with the style of design I would like to produce on Placement Year.  I am really interested in minimal design and branding; I'm obsessed with slick contemporary design that is full of concepts and background. I am also interested in editorial design, the use of negative space and ideas surrounding fashion branding and marketing. I am also a big fan of Scandinavia and the design aesthetic that comes from this region. Taking all that into account, I have opted for a very minimalistic and fresh design aesthetic; taking this pastel pink hue colour scheme throughout the 3 design ideas ultim...

Creative Exchange Week: InDesign Workshop

Image
I decided to attend the InDesign workshop held by Aidan and Rob during Creative Exchange Week. I have slowly grown a love for the software over the past two years, and I regularly want to learn more when it comes to knowledge of InDesign. The software plays a vital role in the work I create, the layouts produced and the final outcomes of most of my projects. I am fascinated by editorial design, and grid layout, therefore, I thought that this workshop would be fit in perfectly with the kind of designs I want to look closer at. We started off by looking at the work of Massimo Vignelli.  Vignelli  is renowned for taking the baseline grid and exploring the use of it within a design, he explains how he begins a book design by laying paper over a simple grid for positioning images and text, which can't be seen in the finished article. "The grid is the underwear of the book," he says. "You wear it, but it's not to be exposed."  Vignelli sketches the images...

Wilson's Republic Conference: Chris Nunn

Image
Chris Nunn delivered my favourite talk of the day, and now I am fascinated with his work and the photos that he takes. The surrounding idea roots fit perfect in my opinion, and his work was profoundly inspiring.  Christopher Nunn is a British photographer working on personal projects and commissions throughout the UK and Europe. He is currently working on long-term documentary projects in Ukraine, where he has worked over multiple trips since 2013. Recent clients include The Financial Times Weekend Magazine, The Telegraph Magazine, i-D, De Correspondent, The Asahi Shimbun Globe, The Wire, Le Monde, The New Yorker, and Weapons of Reason. In 2015 he was nominated for the prestigious Prix Pictet award and in 2016 was selected as one of PDN’s 30 new and Emerging Photographers. Having a huge interest in photography and subscribing to many of the magazines named above, I have probably subconsciously flicked past his work without actually realising it is him.  We, firs...

Eve, being a designer from Leeds, and talking on the subject of roots, made me very interested in her talk.  Eve started talking about her influences, her design background and the idea of being of a creative. As part of the roots theme, Eve discussed her what makes her an original today. Eve talked about how she was influenced by gothic influences as a child, always watching programmes such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Donny Darko. She was still encouraged to be a creative coming from a...

Wilson's Republic Conference: The Business of Design

Image
As part of the Business of Design part of the Wilson's Republic Conference, we heard from Lesley Gulliver who works for the Engine Room Huddersfield. Lesley is interested in measurable returns and understands ‘brand’ regarding impact, growth, service development and culture change, benefiting both our clients and The Engine Room. She is also one of a small number of Design Associates for the Design Council - the national strategic body for design.  Lesley started by talking about how we put a price on our work. It is something that I am interested learning about when it comes to possibly working for myself and having my own freelance business. We then spoke about the Impact of Design and how measuring impact can come thr...

Based around the roots idea and theme of the conference, Foley decided to talk about the roots of typography and the way in which they developed from history. He started by talking about hieroglyphics and their influence on today's typography aesthetic and how each hieroglyphic had a different meaning and bac...

Wilson's Republic Conference

Image
"From designing textiles to engineering gearboxes, Huddersfield has a rich history of world-class design running through it.  Wilson's Republic #6 aims to celebrate these roots by looking to the future. Set over the course of a day we will bring together the design community to chat, work, listen and learn." Today I visited the WRC which was a design conference based in Huddersfield by which we received talks by industry professionals, photographers with a host of different tasks and schemes taking place throughout the day. Overall, I thought the day was a brilliant day and has inspired me to look at visiting more conferences in the future.  Coming from Leeds, a close town to Huddersfield, it was fascinating to me to find out more about the real roots and historical influence that has influenced designers from the city or now working near the location. Overall, I thought the theme based on roots was suitable due to the growth and development of this relat...
