Year One After Effects Finale

Image
Today was the Final After Effects workshop by which we were required to create an artwork of an object or creature that lives in the sky. The final outcome would be a collaborative film project that would be a combination of all my groups' work. We were allowed to  use sound effects, vector and photoshop artwork, and any techniques  that are appropriate to bring my animation  to life. I started by looking at the type of art I wanted to create. After looking at work by Hungry Sandwich Club and Hey Studio, It was important to me to create a fun, playful and imaginative artwork in order to animate it to fit the chosen theme of a creature or object in the sky. Both design studios share the ethos of creating eye-catching work that can stand alone as illustration or be part of a brand identity.  Being inspired by  Hungry Sandwich Club and Hey Studio , I chose to use Illustrator as a main design software. ...

Self Negotiated; Project Outline and Proposal

Describe your project concept and the reason for doing it? What is the theme and/or topic of your project? I am going to start by looking at subculture/culture and brand/anti-brand. The idea of the project will be surrounding one of London’s quirkiest and most extravagant restaurants that is unique to its form. Archipelago is a unique experience that really reaches out to intrepid diners; serving all things weird and wonderful, such as crocodile, kangaroo, and wildebeest. Archipelago is a Thai and East Asian cuisine based restaurant, with the name coming from the definition for “ an extensive group of islands ”. The glow of golden Buddhas, dwarf palm trees and giant peacock feathers are current themes and branding efforts that infiltrate through the visual aesthetic but the current design of the restaurant is heavily dated.  Is the intention to inform, comment, promote, narrate etc? What is the need for this visual communication? The intention of the new brand...

Self Negotiated: First Research Ideas

First look at the research document I have created that looks at Idea surround the rebrand of a Oriental Restaurant situated in the heart of London. This document will be printed and presented at review.

Cinema 4D: Introduction to the basics

Image
In todays society motion and static graphics created on Cinema4D, are seen everywhere; from advertisements, commercials, and billboard design. The creative and implicit nature of the design creates a meaningful but very effective process of using this unique piece of software.   Today in one of the last Process and Production workshop we were given the opportunity to play around with Cinema 4D. The software was something I haven't played around with before and it was all very new to me. We were introduced to the interface and the basic elements of it.  We were also introduced to the rendering effects of the software- simple rendering and rendering for saving. The refined and simplistic nature of the design shows that the refinement can be very unique and effective.  The software, that is free for students and fairly simplistic to use, was presented to us in different stages. We started by...

Post Production Response

Image
In the later seminar we were tasked with coming up with our own unique Post Productive response. We were given images taken from the lecture along with scissors and glue. The task was to edit and cut up the images. By doing this and documenting it effectively we were already working in the style of Nicolas Bourriaud's iconic writing. The idea was to document either a time lapse or GIF file that we could then distribute and allow others to be inspired and create. Our mess and creations were then to be edited by the next seminar group. This ultimately was a small demonstration of the art world, how an artist puts out his work to his audience and others flock to manipulate, edit and in some cases steal parts of the idea for use in their own creation. We were also asked to use the hashtag - cutups to get a conversation and narrative flowing.  When we first got the pack of paper including our images I was d...

Post Modernism and Appropriation: Part 1; Post-Production

Image
http://www.sternberg-press.com/index.php?pageId=1139&bookId=39&l=en Post-Production is a contemporary media output that is becoming more and more popular within art and design. The stylistic approach is about taking already existing imagery, art, or or data and moving it around and editing it in a way that is unique. It is a form of digital media that contrasts with it's more vintage analogue and print forms. This digital artwork can then be viewed, distributed and modified further which is in turn another process of post-productive measures.  Nicholas  Bourriaud   wrote a book in 2002 named "Post Production".  The French writer discusses how, since the early nineties, an ever increasing number of artworks have been created on the basis of preexisting works. In his own perspective, the artist takes a piece of work into new and fresh contexts - often taking objects and ideas and ...

Adobe Illustrator CC (Morpholo Tile Task)

Image
As an introduction to the Adobe Illustrator CC, this process and production session focused upon basic pen tool skills in relation to drawing/rendering and the manipulation of typographic letter forms.  We started off the session by learning information about Morpholo tiles and the design and context that surround them. We then learnt how to generate a random pattern making system - the idea is that we create 6 tiles that would work as a game that can be placed together and fit to make one similar to that of a jigsaw and a game of dominos.  Then, researching into a specific type using font book and online resources, we were encouraged to work as abstract as possible when using elements from a specific type. I chose to look at an Arabic Style of font as at the minute I am very fascinated with the aesthetic and look of an Arabian Style. I love the smooth lines and form and the way in which they link and bond in style...

Sketchbooks as Research; A Bridge between Theory & Practice

Image
This lecture as part of Theory as Practice was giving by artist and designer Jay Payne. The lecture was very interesting to me because it discussed the effect of a sketchbook and the rough and quick idea sketches that come before a final outcome.  "As a creative, my approach to my practice overall would best be described as an Illustrator. I was originally trained in traditional Graphic Design and Technical Communications, but have always had a broad outlook on design in general." Images taken from: http://www.jaypayne.co.uk/html/draughtsman.html His work covers a vast range of topics; from illustration, graphic design and typography. His sketches are what have a particular interest of mine; I love to utilise sketchbooks and get the most out of the quick and rough sketches that enable us as designers to think visually on the paper. He also mentioned how he often keeps sketchbooks to look back on  whic...
