Essay Briefing

In this lecture, we were introduced to our second-year essay brief. The brief is to produce a 5000-word essay based around a research project of our own choice relating back to the subject of graphic design.  The essay is a written response to your own independent research. Research may be conducted in, but not limited to, histories, practices, theories, and technologies about contemporary graphic design and/or animation. You will draw upon historical and modern methods relevant to your discipline as well as opinions and concepts from other subjects, such as literature, philosophy, art, music, and science.  The essay should contain the following elements: 1) A title that outlines a clear and focused interest. 2) A 150-word abstract which summarises the essay’s arguments and position. 3) 5 keywords. 4) An introduction that outlines the central themes and arguments presented throughout the essay. 5) The main body of the essay should develop unique cri...

Cinema 4D as a Design Tool (1)

Image
This was my first Process and Production Lesson of the year. This, which was taken by Jay, was an introductory lesson to Cinema 4D. Although I have worked on the software previously, I thought the lesson was an excellent recap of the software looking at all the different ways in which the software can be used to create amazing design.  We started off by looking at inspirational work created in the software. There is a vast number of outcomes you can produce on the software; comparing artist Baugasm (who creates a series of animated Instagram posts) to the Channel 4 Rebrand that included a series of moving blocks. It was noted that while these moving animated blocks could have been manually created, Cinema 4D stepped in to make a fascinating outcome.  So we started off by setting up a professional folder approach. This industry way of setting up files and folders is a good habit to get into when saving design files. We then started by producing a pie...

Genealogy Briefing

In today's lecture were briefed on our new project title and theme; it was surrounding the idea of Genealogy and how a spark of an idea or message can create several narratives that can lead to producing something fascinating and somewhat compelling.  For the project, we were also asked to question more in-depth responses; analysing outcomes to create something fascinating.  For this brief I was asked to develop a narrative to a found object, developing visual language and communication using the recovered material. The challenge here is to elevate, alter, and advance the perception of the object using original storytelling techniques, through research and creative thinking. We are asked to develop the brief through 4 parts; Undertake creative and ambitious research beyond the parameters of each theme based on a chosen object  Develop a first narrative about the found item  Flip and Distort the story to show a changed genealogy practice Create ...
