Imminent Self; Developed Ideas
I have developed further work surrounding my recent studio project Imminent Self. Working on feedback from tutors as well as looking at the direction I want to take my project, I am now developing previous work to hopefully come up with a concept idea.
Developing from Photography from before, I have now decided to look at the work of Deutsche & Japaner who create more ambiguous work based on personal items that relate well to imminent self. This inspired me to take more different photos, looking at ideas that would only be able to be associated with my friend Niamh.
I also looked more into this idea of VCR recordings and disposable cameras and how these relate to much to myself and my childhood; being one of the most personal ways we used to document celebrated events. This then inspired me to try to edit the pictures in this glitch and vintage manner by which would relate to this very personal way of documenting work. There is a real trend at the minute of fashion houses implementing this design aesthetic into their branding identity by which gives them an edgy and vintage style.
I also experimented with this VCR font and how, for me, it has this really old school aesthetic. I thought about taking this idea of play and calling my final product play-zine or play magazine by which you would be able to play through someone's life in an editorial format. Play would also relate to the extensive research I produced on old-school ways of recording and documenting life.
I also looked at very personal meanings of artwork. I looked at Zine culture and how these are incredible features that enable us a glimpse of someone's life and style through a DIY aesthetic. I took this zine culture and implemented it within my work, bringing Niamh into Uni to lay out the disposable pictures in her own way and her own style. I also got her to photocopy these pictures to add more grainy texture and in true Zine Culture, I photocopied personal items such as her hands, jumper, cap and handwriting - all that are culturally Niamh.
I also looked at personal artwork that deals with taboo subjects on a different scale. Beyonce's Lemonade film enabled me to look at a body of work that tackled multiple cultural subjects; such as race, gender, sexuality, and infidelity. I want to create something like this that really tackles these important subjects.
