Publishing Process and Production Work

Image
As a young designer, I think it is very important that we publish our work and show off our work to the fullest. When coming to applying for placement opportunities I decided to utilise my process and production work because I feel that throughout the year I have developed a style and a way of working that now fits me as a designer. Every task and workshop has allowed us all to produce very similar work and every task I have tried to put my own spin on the work; always coming at it with an editorial eye, blending a mix of image, type, and colour to create this whole brand that I am very proud of. Here is how I have shown off my work through multiple media outlets such as my website and Instagram page.  joemitchell.design  @joemitchelldesign

Year 2 After Effects Show Reel

Image
For this weeks process and production workshop, we were tasked to create a showreel of all of our best work from the year that was created in After Effects. Throughout the year, developing my own style when it comes to Graphic Design and Animation I have kept a constant brand running throughout all my work. Loving the Editorial content and using a muted nude pink colour palette, I have created coherent and interesting artwork that represents me very well as a designer, adding a touch of my own style to whatever brief is given.  After recently completing my website, Cover Letter, and CV Design, all using my simple silhouette logo and the exact colour scheme that runs throughout I decided to tackle this brief in a way by which it would seem like an animated portfolio. Starting off with my logo and flowing with the audio track through using After Effect markers, I have created a piece of work that flows well through transitioning through different projects. Always trying...

Creating Presentations

Image
For this weeks process and production with Jay, we completed an overview of presentation techniques with multiple things to consider when creating PDF Presentations. I really enjoyed the initial sound of this project as it comes from an editorial and image content background.                                                        We started by looking at Scanned images and how we can manipulate these in a way that would benefit the aesthetic of the presentation. Increasing the colour balance, auto tone and the lightness and contrast enables for the actual drawing, photo or graphic become more visually appealing. We then looked at cohesive ways in which we can manipulate the flow and narrative of a presentation and how we can create a journey for the viewer by the use of guidelines and grids. I normally use grids and guides within ...

Bread Typography

Image
This weeks Process and Production workshop was based around the idea of creating Typography out of a limited medium. Our medium that we had to create with was Bread. Our task was to each bring along with us one loaf of bread and, working in a pair, create inventive structures and outcomes out of an everyday household object.  We started thinking about ideas surrounding how we would manipulate the bread in such a way that the aesthetic still looked good and you could tell what letter it was. We started, I think, In the same way as everyone else - cutting out simple letter forms from each slice that suggested the shape of a particular letter. We were then challenged by Nick to think outside the box and to think about how the crust of the loaf was working as a frame and somewhat a barrier to our creations. We then thought about looking at the loaf as a whole instead of single slices.  I already knew of the Design Agency Wonderland, who designed an organically shape...

The Stencil Part 2

Image
In the 5th Self Publishing Workshop, we developed ideas again surrounding stencils but were influenced by type. In the workshop, we were given three different types and we were asked to pick certain parts of the type to deduct. We would draw them on the card and then later cut them out to create a stencil for print.  I particularly focused on Baskerville and Din, picking out certain parts of their typeface that were unique; I focused mainly on the loops of the Baskerville 'G', the bracket on certain capital letters like the Baskerville 'H', the ascenders of Din's 'H' and 'L' and the tail of Din's 'Y'. I also removed certain parts, taking away the ascender on Din's 'K' and focusing on the link or neck of the 'X'.  It was then my task to think about a unique layout composition that I could follow that would allow me to inventively work with these shapes. I decided to try and make different letters and shapes inclu...

Website Design

Image
For my Placement Year, I have decided to create an online presence by sharing my work online through a website. Keeping in line with my CV Design and Cover Letter example I have decided to add the same font, colour scheme and layout design that should hopefully marry it with the sort of brand I am going for relating back to the type of designs I enjoy creating.  Here is the rough outline of my website design. My website is: www.joemitchell.design

3D Project

Image
Workshop 4 in the 6 workshops for AfterEffects was all to do with z-space, cameras, and animation in 3 dimensions We also developed techniques surrounding advanced compositing, textures, working with visual styling, production, and project builds. Before the workshop, Sara showed us lots of very inspiring projects, one being a music video by MGMT called All I Ever Wanted. I particularly loved the way in which textures and roll on effects were used to tell a story. MGMT - All We Ever Wanted Was Everything from oneedo on Vimeo . We were told to focus on textures, vector shapes, and interesting themes that we could explore through this motion of a narrative and the use of a flowing video animation. We were told prior that we would look into this idea of images rolling onto the screen with shadows and textures all interlinked to create a unique and inventive outcome. We were also told that the better the artwork before the more interesting outcome.  I ...
