Branding Lecture and Seminar

Todays lecture was on Branding in Graphic Design. This lecture was given by Tracey Lannon on how branding has adapted and changed our perception of the corporate world; I find lectures like this very interesting as branding is something I heavily want to look at throughout my degree. We started off by looking at famous logos, their simplicity and the effectiveness of them; how the Netlfix 'N' or the Mcdonalds 'M' is so iconic in todays modern society, it doesn't need any punchline or image to go with it.
Barbara Kruger: Don't be a Jerk

Barbara Kruger: Fear and Hate

We also looked at the work of Barbara Kruger who heavily deals with art and advertising combined; she creates very political and motivating peaces of art that pushes the boundaries on taboo subjects and topical themes. She talks a lot in her work about women's rights and gender equality, and at the time her work was very revolutionary and epic. We also discussed the effect of Kruger's work on brands such as Supreme. I found it strange how this lecture was given to us right in the middle of the year completing the first stages of their essay; I have just completed looking at Krugers work and Supreme as I am basing my own essay on Skate Subcultures and how the brand Supreme started off as a traditional piece of political artwork and how it has flowed into a very modern contemporary design with their new concept creations such as look-books and advertisements being heavily juxtaposed with stylish photography and edgy art graphics.

For the later seminar we looked at an essay about Consumer culture as a creative process which had links to Culture and Subculture. I think that the mix between the lecture and seminar has really benefitted my Theory as Practice Essay question as they have both held super relevance.

First of all we decoded the essay pulling out relevant points of interest. We also highlighted parts we didn't understand and circled key words and ideas that may have an interest to us in our own essay or beliefs. We then had to right a 3 sentence summary highlighting the three individual parts of the essay:

"To summarise, consumers are manipulated by the advertising and marketing world which then creates a hyperreality which questions whether anything after all is actually 'Real'. As said, it can also differentiate between markets; a bike designed for a woman is an example of how subcultures change and vary within society. To finalise, Consumption plays a vital role in the expressive nature at which we consume materialistic products - it is all a creative process."
