In this seminar we were introduced to an article from the Observer about Relational Design. We were asked to decode it and pull out any meaningful influences, interesting terms or fun facts that we have learnt. We were also asked to think about our own practice and what holds ressanence to ourselves. This weeks guest lecture was provided by  freelance designer and illustrator  Mike Lemanski.  Mike Lemanski (b.1986) is a British freelance designer and illustrator based in the UK currently working on design-led commissions, posters, iconography, editorial Illustrations, maps, book covers, data visualisations, infographics and full design campaigns.  His work focuses strongly on concepts and encompasses a number of areas within the fields of design, illustration and art, mixing experimental printmaking with digital and traditional mediums. Alongside his personal work, he has worked with a variety of clients from global publications to international brands, utilising a playful and graphic approach to briefs and projects. In this theory lecture we looked at the idea of performance art and the way in which this art form can challenge the way in which we perceive or appreciate the art form. We are always told to cross-link modules in order to broaden our horizon when developing work within studio projects so therefore, when thinking about imminent self, I am going to try and bring in this theory.  In the lecture we were shown performance art to try and enhance our visual analysis module by which we are required to think outside the box and more ambiguously. We were introduced to Nicholas  Bourriaud, who came up with the theory of Relational Aestetics.  The French curator Nicholas Bourriaud published a book called   Relational Aesthetics   in 1998 in which he defined the term as: A set of artistic practices which take as their theoretical and practical point of departure the whole of human relations and their social context, rather than an independent and private space ...

In today's Process and Production, we worked with Rotoscoping to produce some fun and creative animations. The session was aimed to introduce us to Masks, layers, looping comps, textures, backgrounds, and track mattes, ideas, about the footage, and time-remapping.  We, first of all, looked at inspiration from various after effects designers. We looked at the work of Drew Tyndall who creates some very original workaround motion graphics. His work is super innovative as it combines the use of animation and brilliantly textured aesthetics that all come together to make a significant outcome. In today's lecture, we got handed the second brief of the year which is titled "Imminent Self". It was explained to us that the project should once again allow us to combine research and development to create a contemporary design idea. This project demands that you channel your intellectual and creative skills, through exploration and self-directed progression that demonstrates your ability and independence, as well as in-depth knowledge and understanding of aesthetic, environmental, marketing and technical requirements of design for the creative industries.  In this brief, we were asked to consider yourself in the present, consider perceptions of self in the digital present, explore what the idea of self is and how it disseminates in the current tech-climate. I decided to attend the InDesign workshop held by Aidan and Rob during Creative Exchange Week. I have slowly grown a love for the software over the past two years, and I regularly want to learn more when it comes to knowledge of InDesign. The software plays a vital role in the work I create, the layouts produced and the final outcomes of most of my projects. I am fascinated by editorial design, and grid layout, therefore, I thought that this workshop would be fit in perfectly with the kind of designs I want to look closer at. We started off by looking at the work of Massimo Vignelli.  Vignelli  is renowned for taking the baseline grid and exploring the use of it within a design, he explains how he begins a book design by laying paper over a simple grid for positioning images and text, which can't be seen in the finished article. For Formative Assessment we had to create a 5 Minute Presentation Summarising our whole Studio Project based around Genealogies. The idea was that it would be spread over 4 pages:  Page 1: Initial Narrative Page 2: Expanded and Distorted Narrative Page 3: Final Outcomes Page 4: Design Development and Visual Communication  Here is what I created. I have decided to keep the layout and style simple, relating to my sketchbook work keeping the editorial feel alive with a minimalist layout design. Because there was a lot to cover, I do think some of the pages look cramped. I think I need to learn to edit ideas down and keep things to a minimum. This use of editing can come in handy when letting my work speak for itself. I am overall pleased with how the presentation went.
