Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Image
Not Vital Today I visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in search of inspiration for my studio project on Sense of Place. I have been the Park many of times but never to research into such topic as this one. I had previously seen the work of KAWS and the work of Antony Gormley but was interested to find out more about the work of Not Vital.  KAWS (or Brian Donnelly) is favourite artist of mine and ever has been since he designed the 2013 Video Music Awards Moon Man Sculpture. When I found out his work was debuting itself at YSP I was very exited to see it in the open air gallery. 6 of his iconic sculptures are at the gallery and the opinion or context behind them are really left open to the viewer. The sculptures are large in size and size among the open air gallery, you can walk around and get a feel of the different areas and the different exaggerated expressions and posses the characters are exhibiting. Th...

Manchester; Studio

Image
For my studio project on A sense of Place I took a trip to Manchester. I love Manchester because it is full of culture and expressive art such as fantastic art galleries, expressive architecture and the place as a whole is diverse in culture. The theme of my project on a sense of place has gathered a slow narrative towards people within place as well as how the place effects their culture. I also would like to gather elements of buildings and infrastructure to use as experimentation for my design work. For example, I could take images then manipulate them in the style of Richard Vergez or recreate them visually in the style of the Boyle Family. Overall, I believe the photos taken from Manchester as well as the experience itself has gained myself inspiration on the narrative flow of my studio project.

Manchester: 100 Years of Vogue

Image
Recently I visited the city of Manchester to gather research for my sense of place project. Whilst in Manchester I got the chance to visit Manchester Art Gallery and view the exhibition 100 Years of Vogue before it closed there. I follow fashion magazines a lot and love the idea of mixing and combining graphic design with fashion marketing and photography and due to the way in which my project was flowing I thought that a look round this exhibition would be very beneficial.  The exhibition celebrated the work of British Vogue which turned 100 years old in 2016.  On the top floor of Manchester Art Gallery you can explore the history of  Vogue , travelling through the decades: one is free to explore Cecil Beaton’s defining images of the 1920s and 1930s; David Bailey’s representation of the swinging sixties; Patrick Demarchelier’s intimate depiction of Cindy, Naomi and Claudia—the original supermodels; plus portraits of some ...

Studio Plan: A Sense of Place

Image
Studio Plan As part of my Studio Module and to complete the first brief of the year I have decided to intensively plan the layout, design and form of my concertina sketchbook. To make sure the concertina sketchbook has a narrative and an artistic flow I have decided to Storyboard my ideas and use a maquette technique to make sure there is a logical and sophisticated order.  Storyboard Template demonstrating rough ideas, rough planning notes as well as a modernist, relevant colour scheme. Maquette technique to order my Broad Secondary Research that enables my work to have a flow

Photo Editing Workshop

Image
In the latest Process and Production workshop we were introduced to photo editing techniques and software that enables us to edit photos in an inventive and professional way. My first thoughts were positive; I love photography and am fascinated with the different ways in which we can manipulate imagery that can be used within Graphic Design.  Working with Adobe Photoshop and using some of Rob's great photography, we started by inputting them into the creative cloud software. We used the lasso tool as well as the magic wand tool to selected and delete parts of the image. We were also introduced to the basic shortcuts of the software. This was all very common to me as I had previously used the software before. We then played around with colour, shadow and hints that overall enhanced the image from the page. All these techniques where very useful to me and I will definitely use the techniques learnt in future project...

One True Sentence: A Bear on a Chair

In today's seminar we learnt different writing techniques and how to add these into our essays to help build content. The technique I found was very interesting and by the end of it the sentence by which I created was heavily detailed with meaning and definition. Here were the instructions that we had to follow that enabled everyone to come out with a different varied and unique extended sentence;  Look at the picture of the Bear; describe it in two sentences Describe where the Bear is sat Describe what the Bear is sat on Describe the bear Add a feeling  Describe something that is about to happen Describe something that had previously happened  My final sentence was: 'After he was left there by his family, the Bear sat lifelessly on the garden chair. He was sat outside alone wondering how to get home.' In the seminar we were also presented with a quote from Ernest Hemingley which said "Do not worry. You have always written before and ...

Adobe After Effects: First attempt

In my third Process and Production tutorial I had a play-around on Adobe After effects.  We started by looking at motion graphics and inspiration; I was fascinated by the actual impact of motion graphics and how much it actually plays a part in advertising a brand. I was also shocked at the outcomes you could create through motion graphics; at first I wasn't particularly interested in the topic but now I feel like I could research and look into in the subject more. One of my favourite motion graphic example is the advertisement for the new iPhone 7 by which varied techniques within After Effects are used to advertise this product.  Apple – iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in 107 seconds from Videolog on Vimeo . So we started by looking at Standard Television Definition and after choosing a free music clip online started creating frames within our After Effects Document that enabled us to create a simultaneous movement throughout the clip. The end result was a v...

Cocktail Menu Design

Image
Recently, I got commissioned by a local bar/pub that I live near to design a new cocktail and food menu. Although, I am only a few months into my degree and my skills are still average on software such as Photoshop and Illustrator I decided that I would give it a try. I took inspiration from colour and other bar menu's and designs I found online etc. I am happy with the results and may possibly give the process a try on In Design instead of Photoshop as my skills and knowledge has been opened up in this software. Here is an example of the final idea:

Project Brief: Subcultures

Image
Discuss the effect of subcultures on influential Graphic Designers The statement above is the project brief by which I have to research different subcultures and analyse one which has had a particular effect on Graphic Design.  At first I started by researching what subcultures are and which are the most iconic: I found many different examples. From Punk subcultures to Grunge, all have had a definite influence on the design industry.  I started my research by looking online and tearing extracts from well known cultural magazines such as I-D Magazine, Dazed, Creative Review, Vorn and Frieze. These magazines specifically tend to look at cultures that are very rogue, underground and specialised which lends itself perfect to a subculture (a cult of people who agree on the same principles and values that differ from a larger and popular culture). I found many great examples of photography, fashion marketing ...

Experience

Image
Recently I came across a collection of work on Behance that experimented with type placed over imagery. I decided to experiment in this style using my own photography that I used for my 'A Sense of Place' brief. This was a very quick experiment I decided to create on Photoshop; however, I feel the result looks very effective and meaningful, with a simple typeface and bold imagery, it sets a feeling with the viewer that they can relate with.  Here are the finished products:

Bauhaus; The Shape Test

Image
The results of my shape test The Bauhaus movement was renowned for creating simplistic, utopian and modern aesthetics and as I have previously learned the square, circle and triangle are a pioneering feature that include themselves in and throughout the Bauhaus Archive. This was due to its constant combination of modern and futuristic elements of art and design that follow the form follows function message as well as colour theory and utility importance.  This test, that I did with my family and friends, allows us to see the psychological way in which we position colour to shape; the task was to assign the 3 primary colours, red, yellow and blue to the 3 most influential shapes within the Bauhaus movement, a square, circle or triangle. The results are as shown. "I chose Red Triangle, Blue Circle and Yellow Square. The Red colour reminds me of danger and danger road si...

Bauhaus; Form Follows Function

The school is influential for its modern take on art; any design nowadays that involves clean aesthetics, modern features or function following form will have originated within the walls of the Bauhaus School of Art. The Bauhaus was also noted for allowing creative disciplines that expressed feelings, emotions or ideas and anything prior to the Bauhaus t...

Location Drawing

Image
The collection of work created  As part of our Process and Production Module we had to do a location drawing task around the town of Huddersfield. Each group was assigned an area of Huddersfield and then as a team it was our job to split into pairs to mark a section of a square piece of land that we could then combine to complete full circle drawing.  My particular drawing area was focused on Huddersfield Train Station. Huddersfield Train Station is one of the most iconic buildings within the Town, being constructed in 1846 in a very central location with hope that it would eventually bring business to the upcoming area of Yorkshire.  These are the two drawings I created whilst on location Drawing in Huddersfield. For this drawing I mapped out my scale using a 1:2 Scale in pencil tone, then finished in the details using a fine liner and pro-marker pens. The first image is of a quick sketch i completed ...

Convergence, Form and Content: The Medium can have a Message

Image
http://cdn8.openculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/28000744/mediummassage.png In this seminar we looked into Convergence, Form, and Content.  Convergence is the forming of two elements; a good example would be a smart phone as it includes many operational devices such as a calculator, phone and camera in one. Convergence, when spoke about within design, is the meeting point in which ideas and functionality come together.  We also looked at form and content and how these play a vital role within Graphic Design: Form is the style and techniques or media used to create the design Content is the works meaning or context - what is it about?  IBM Logo by Paul Rand   We looked at different examples of work by different artists.  Paul Rand's 'IBM Rebus' (1981) is a picture that you decode with your mind and a riddle that gets the viewer thinking. This is an example of a visual metaphor about communica...
