Bauhaus; The Shape Test
The results of my shape test |
The Bauhaus movement was renowned for creating simplistic, utopian and modern aesthetics and as I have previously learned the square, circle and triangle are a pioneering feature that include themselves in and throughout the Bauhaus Archive. This was due to its constant combination of modern and futuristic elements of art and design that follow the form follows function message as well as colour theory and utility importance.
This test, that I did with my family and friends, allows us to see the psychological way in which we position colour to shape; the task was to assign the 3 primary colours, red, yellow and blue to the 3 most influential shapes within the Bauhaus movement, a square, circle or triangle. The results are as shown.
"I chose Red Triangle, Blue Circle and Yellow Square. The Red colour reminds me of danger and danger road signs. Blue is a 'cool' colour and feel and is a circle as it doesn't have any edges and is smooth. The square is yellow because it was the last colour I had."
"I chose the Circle to be Red, the Square to be Blue and the Triangle to be Yellow. I remember these colours from primary school and feel they relate to the books and shapes illustrated there."
"The Yellow is the triangle because it is pointy and so alert like the colour itself; bright and in your face. The Square is blue, because its flat, like the sea, and open like open air or space. The circle is red, its round, like a drop of blood."
I think that this exercise is so fascinating: Im stunned how every single person used a visual language to describe these shapes. Im also fascinated that most people chose the same combination as myself; I like to think as myself as a visual learner or a visual thinker which is fascinating also. This idea was passed through he Bauhaus, all visual learners who were trying to seek a much more modern era of art.
