Project Brief: Subcultures
Discuss the effect of subcultures on influential Graphic Designers
The statement above is the project brief by which I have to research different subcultures and analyse one which has had a particular effect on Graphic Design.
At first I started by researching what subcultures are and which are the most iconic: I found many different examples. From Punk subcultures to Grunge, all have had a definite influence on the design industry.
I started my research by looking online and tearing extracts from well known cultural magazines such as I-D Magazine, Dazed, Creative Review, Vorn and Frieze. These magazines specifically tend to look at cultures that are very rogue, underground and specialised which lends itself perfect to a subculture (a cult of people who agree on the same principles and values that differ from a larger and popular culture). I found many great examples of photography, fashion marketing and graphic design that fit around the idea of subculture: I also love looking through these editorials as Fashion, Layout and Advertising are a particular interest of mine.
Here are some broad examples of subcultures I found:
- Skate Subculture
- Grunge Subculture
- Punk Subculture
- Minimalist Subculture
I also found a few videos online that described the different subcultures mentioned above: when I choose one in specific I would then research the different techniques and styles of Graphic Design for me to analyse for my essay subject.
