Formative Assessment: Genealogies

Image
For Formative Assessment we had to create a 5 Minute Presentation Summarising our whole Studio Project based around Genealogies. The idea was that it would be spread over 4 pages:  Page 1: Initial Narrative Page 2: Expanded and Distorted Narrative Page 3: Final Outcomes Page 4: Design Development and Visual Communication  Here is what I created. I have decided to keep the layout and style simple, relating to my sketchbook work keeping the editorial feel alive with a minimalist layout design. Because there was a lot to cover, I do think some of the pages look cramped. I think I need to learn to edit ideas down and keep things to a minimum. This use of editing can come in handy when letting my work speak for itself. I am overall pleased with how the presentation went.

The Poster

In today's second Self Publishing workshop we looked more into the use of typography within publishing and how these can be manipulated to our advantage as designers.  We started by looking at inspiration. I am very interested in this way of working and often find myself being influenced by many of the designers shown. We began by looking at Experimental Jetset;  Experimental Jetset is a small, independent, Amsterdam-based graphic design studio, founded in 1997 by (and still consisting of) Marieke Stolk, Erwin Brinkers and Danny van den Dungen. Focusing on printed matter and site-specific installations, and describing their methodology as “turning language into objects”, Experimental Jetset have worked on projects for a wide variety of institutes. When using typography and sourcing inspiration for fresh ways of designing, I often turn to these designers for inspiration as their work is always pushing boundaries and testing the limits to how far publication can ...

Development of Genealogies

Image
Developing on from my original and extended narrative I have played around with many different techniques and ideas.  I started by creating a typography idea. Being inspired by the Stonewall Inn, the New York pub that sparked the stonewall riot, featuring Marsha P. Johnson and other famous activists,  I took the signature 'S' Neon logo and recreated it in Illustrator. I then decided to be inspired by artists Lungdren and Linquists who did work for a Festival which was scoped for blurring the lines surrounding LGBT. Instead of blurring the lines I came up with the concept of reading between the lines, therefore, deleting the original typeface leaving the inner shaping. This spark of idea, left me with a very contemporary and interesting design. The shapes, lines and form reminded me of Lester Beall's iconic shaping that influenced numerous fashion brands across the globe. The lettering, although contemporary, held enough relevance to my research....

Cinema 4D as a Design Tool (2)

Image
In the second Cinema 4D Process and Production Workshop we were introduced to more software techniques and more ways in which Cinema 4D can be a beneficial tool when creating excellent design work. This session was aimed to add us to dynamics & particle systems purposed for randomised design. The idea was also that it is very random and throughout we were given the opportunity to pick and choose different elements which meant that although the workshop was a step by step guide, the overall outcome was different for every person.  We started by looking at inspiration. GMUK is a very creative designer and animator who has established himself as one of the top visual design directors in the world. His game-changing techniques us lighting and real studies to craft bold imagery in both the live action and interactive world. It is for this use of crafting and exploring materials and their purpose which is what makes hi...

Genealogies: Extended Narrative

Image
As part of the Extended Narrative on researching into a Genealogy based on a chosen object, I decided to take my project on a different route and concept that is fairly unique in response to what I normally opt for in design. Starting the project, I was aiming to edge towards a fashion concept or idea, that had meaningful background and ideas surrounding the military jacket.  It was when I saw a quote by a famous drag queen that I decided to take my project in a different direction.  " My drag is an exaggeration - not a direct copy or appropriation - of femininity. It's not really gendered, and I always look the same - same hair, same makeup. That's pretty important. I can pick out an outfit, then everything else is uniform. I'm always on the go - so I can whack it all together and get out and do my work. It's practical, and that's a pretty masculine method of dressing I'd say. It's my version of a tailored work suit. We all know a suit is ...

Loops and Living Holds

In this first After Effects workshop of the year, I was really excited to start creating more moving image work after really enjoying it last year. In this first After Effects workshop, we were introduced to exploring geometry, form, the use of colour and space, and looking at motion graphics production techniques.  We started by looking at inspiration. We were shown a Motion Graphic piece of work by Steffan K, a Danish Born Creative who  specialises in motion design and art direction for moving images. Steffen combines classic graphic design with modern animation and forward-thinking audio & music. His work was really inventive and inspiring. We mainly looked at one piece of work by him called -  30 Motion Tests in 30 Seconds.  "Over a period of 30 days, I challenged myself to created 1 second of animation every day. The idea was to experiment and explore workflow in the software package Cinema 4D and publish one frame from my experiments daily. ...

Genealogies; First Narrative

Image
Narrative 1: Historical Influence on today's contemporary fashion branding For the first narrative, I have chosen to research further into the idea of the history of the military jacket, the effect of war on influential designers of the time period and then how this has flown into the branding and design of cutting-edge contemporary designers today.  I decided to visit the imperial war museum and look at the history and effect of war. I instantly gravitated towards the posters and the design context of them. These significant, bold extracts of a sans-serif font, pasted across posters and photo montages of taboo subjects and fragile imagery was very interesting. As a big fan of editorial and fashion branding and design, I notice a clear correlation between this use of edgy industrial approaches a trend within the fashion world. Off-White and A-COLD-WALL are two brands that heavily work on this theme, even going to the extent of pasting words, fragments and milita...
