Genealogies; First Narrative

Narrative 1: Historical Influence on today's contemporary fashion branding

For the first narrative, I have chosen to research further into the idea of the history of the military jacket, the effect of war on influential designers of the time period and then how this has flown into the branding and design of cutting-edge contemporary designers today.

I decided to visit the imperial war museum and look at the history and effect of war. I instantly gravitated towards the posters and the design context of them. These significant, bold extracts of a sans-serif font, pasted across posters and photo montages of taboo subjects and fragile imagery was very interesting. As a big fan of editorial and fashion branding and design, I notice a clear correlation between this use of edgy industrial approaches a trend within the fashion world. Off-White and A-COLD-WALL are two brands that heavily work on this theme, even going to the extent of pasting words, fragments and military influence upon the actual apparel being created. I related their work back to the work of Lester Beall and Alexey Brodovitch whos work on producing the first real editorial was all inspired by his input in the war.

I then made a definite link which finished the narrative looking at other designers that take influence from this war-torn approach to design. Other designers such as Raf Simons and Neil Barret can also exuberate harsh lines and modern collections that in my opinion are linked heavily to the rise of this sharp military trend in fashion. I then went on to look at typography, and after gathering a range of printed headline war newspapers and decoding the lettering, I found an excellent aesthetic that could be developed further into different branding opportunities.

Overall, I am happy with this narrative and the flow at which it is following. For the part 2 of the twisted and distorted narrative, I think I am going to focus on looking more into this idea within women within the war, gender, sex, and race in comparison with industry or war within today's culture. Either way, I want the project to form a personal response.
