Essay First Ideas

For my essay I have decided to look into Scandinavian Design and the way Britain as a culutre is fascinated with Deisgn from this area of the globe. 


I have been heavily inspired by myself, being a big fan of Scandinavian clothing companys such as ACNE, COS and Norse Projects which all originate from Northern Europe. I am also inspired  by the way in which Britain as a country is fixated on buying all things Scandinavian when purchasing interior design; this has come from the globalisation of particular global icons such as IKEA and Hay. 

 I am particulary fascinated with branding so therefore I would then like to disect the brand and pick apart the reasons why we opt for a much more minimal, slick Scandi-Design. 

 I also want to look into the history and why there is such  surge in this particular design today.

Adobe Illustrator CC (Morpholo Tile Task)

As an introduction to the Adobe Illustrator CC, this process and production session focused upon basic pen tool skills in relation to drawing/rendering and the manipulation of typographic letter forms.  We started off the session by learning information about Morpholo tiles and the design and context that surround them. We then learnt how to generate a random pattern making system - the idea is that we create 6 tiles that would work as a game that can be placed together and fit to make one similar to that of a jigsaw and a game of dominos.  Then, researching into a specific type using font book and online resources, we were encouraged to work as abstract as possible when using elements from a specific type. I chose to look at an Arabic Style of font as at the minute I am very fascinated with the aesthetic and look of an Arabian Style. Kinetic Typography 2: Z-Space

In this workshop we learned  about 3D space - exploring depth and the z-axis in after effects.  C himamanda Ngozi Adichie's Speech used in Beyonce's World tour Prior to the workshop we were asked to prepare a text, quote, or song lyric to work with which we would then move, rotate and manipulate with Z-Space using After Effects. I chose to use C himamanda Ngozi Adichie's motivational speech about feminism - it has been a hit globally, with thousands of hits on Youtube and even an appearance on Beyonce's 2013 Album. The speech talks about women rights and the role of women in todays society so I believe it is a strong and powerful message to use within my work.  I inputted each word by word and decided to move past the recommended 10 second video so that the audience can really get a full grasp of the quote and the full nature of my intention which was to manipulate the words to what...

Essay Writing

Today we did some more work on essay writing and decoding an essay to pick out the good and bad points of it. I have finally decided on a theme; to discuss how a skate subculture can effect and influence Graphic Design. I have researched thoroughly into skate subculture and have decided to talk mostly about the Supreme brand, it's history to Barbara Kruger and its now influences of culture around the world - for example, how Supreme has now hired a contemporary graphic designer who juxtaposes its slick fashion editorial with edgy compositions or how young and inspiring designers are taking it upon themselves to decorate supreme street posters and shop front displays.  Todays task was to bring in an image and a short piece of writing for editing. As peers, we edited the writing and gave tips and feedback on it. I thought it was very helpful altogether and has inspired me to write more for my essay on skate subculture....
