Final Abstract

"Scandinavian Design is routed into the DNA of the population of Northern Europe, and it is now sweeping the globe, becoming embedded into our everyday lives, through the principles of ingenuity, equality and justice. Influenced by a long history of centric communities, process driven design and environmentally friendly aesthetics, it is no wonder that western culture is craving designs from this part of the world. The long history of design comes from an emphasis on appreciating the domestic environment that originates from a form of social democracy after the war. Low-cost materials and methods of mass production have allowed for this trend of minimal clean designs to flood worldwide. Although first popular with a crowd of Architects and Interior Designers, through concepts of Hygge and Lago, it has only become more appealing to foreign consumers. COS, an iconic Swedish Clothing Company, is a brand carved around an unexpected market of designers and aficionados through the use of design. Using a Texta Alt Font and a muted colour scheme, Milk Work curate a design scheme that celebrates a new wave of Scandi-Design. ACNE opt for a more authentic approach to their branding concept; ACNE's background comes from a desire for creating something new and exciting that was from designer to designer. Using colour to break gender norms and developing a collaborative Brand with Letters from Sweden, the outcome celebrates nature, and the people who are buying these minimal Swedish Items. IKEA is another world-renowned brand that celebrates originating from Nordic Design Process. Recognised for being Swedish, IKEA prefers to design around utility and ingenuity, graphically manufacturing the way in which the customer shops through the use of type, colour and notoriety. IKEA collaborations then carve the way for a new Millennial Customer. Working with very consumer-based brands such as Balenciaga and OFF-WHITE, and through System's IKEA and OFF-WHITE collaboration report, we get to analyse this new millennial market, compare customer bases and explore how Scandinavian Design is only on the rise. "
